Climate Change

Changes in our average weather and changes in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events.

Climate change

Climate change refers to changes in our average weather and is also reflected in changes in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. Changes in climate are evident both globally and nationally. Climate Ireland provides you with the information to help you understand what climate change, how our climate has changed already and is expected to change and why we need to adapt to changing climate conditions.

Ireland's climate is changing in line with global changes: temperatures have increased, and this increase has become more rapid since the 1990s, patterns of precipitation are changing, sea level is rising, the occurrence of frost and cold days is decreasing while the number of hot days is increasing. Projections indicate that these changes will continue and intensify over the coming decades.
