Impact of climate change on Ireland

Ireland's climate is changing in line with global changes and projections indicate that these changes will continue and intensify over the coming decades. However, the changing climate has different impacts in different locations. Impacts come from the specific conditions of the region; its physical geography, built environment, social and cultural conditions, etc.

Ireland is an island in the Atlantic with low central plains and a ring of coastal mountains. The island has a temperate oceanic climate with a prevailing wind from the southwest. 40% of the population lives within 5km of the coast. All of this has implications for how the future climate will impact Ireland and the main hazards we are likely to face.
